How Much Paint Do You Need for a 12×12 Room?

The short answer: two gallons covers the walls of a typical 12×12 room with 8-foot ceilings in two coats — with a little left over for touch-ups. Here's the math, and the three situations where that answer changes.

The standard math

A 12×12 room with 8-foot ceilings has 384 square feet of wall surface (the perimeter, 48 feet, times the height). Subtract a standard door (21 sq ft) and two windows (about 15 sq ft each), and you're painting roughly 333 square feet. Quality interior paint covers about 350 square feet per gallon on smooth, previously painted walls — so one coat is just under a gallon, and the two coats almost every color change needs come to about 1.9 gallons. Buy two.

Adding the ceiling? That's another 144 square feet — one additional gallon covers it in two coats, though white-on-white repaints often pass with one.

When two gallons isn't enough

Textured or thirsty walls. Fresh drywall, skim-coated repairs, and textured finishes absorb 20–40% more paint. Budget with a coverage rate of 250–300 sq ft per gallon instead — which pushes a 12×12 room toward two and a half gallons.

Dramatic color changes. Going from burgundy to off-white isn't a two-coat job with regular paint — it's a primer job. Nine- or ten-foot ceilings. Every extra foot of height adds 48 square feet in this room — noticeable but not dramatic. A 12×12 room with 10-foot ceilings needs about 2.4 gallons for two coats; still two gallon cans plus a quart.

The buying strategy

Round to quarts, not gallons: a quart covers roughly 90 square feet, so if the math says 2.2 gallons, buy two gallons and one quart rather than a third full gallon. The exception is when you land within a quart of a full gallon — then buy the gallon, because running dry mid-wall leaves lap marks, and per-ounce the gallon is cheaper anyway.
